BMW Z4 review in detail:

Initially, the Z4 was available only as a roadster, but in 2006 a coupé version was officially launched. Sheer driving pleasure is hard to find these days, and the BMW Z4 almost has too much.

The Z4 roadster and M coupe thumb their automotive nose and the rest of their stunning bodies at automotive convention. They have fascinating curves that are both convex and controversially concave in their lines.

The power comes from one of several of BMW's silky smooth six-cylinder engines. These sixes are great fun to sit behind and wonderfully responsive.

There's a real burble from each of the engines, especially from that of the M Coupe, with its highly tuned 3.2-litre straight-six, although it does have a slightly annoying drone when cruising at around 2000 rpm. The driving position is great - you sit low down, almost back at the rear wheels, and look out over that long, shapely bonnet.

Keen drivers will love the Z4's handling, it's a real blue-blood, with all that means in the way of high-spirited twitchiness and steering that's almost too fast in its reactions.

These are machines for the real driver, not just the cruiser, and that's the way owners like it.
