HYUNDAI ACCENT review in detail:

Hyundai took an interesting design route for the latest Accent.

It has its own styling with a semi-sporty Euro look that works nicely, rather than the hatchback being simply a sedan with a new rear-end shape.

The sedan is substantially longer than the hatch and is also more conservative in its lines.

Interior room is good in the three-door, with space for four adults with no real need to compromise on legroom. Getting into the back seat through the front doors isn't particularly easy.

The dashboard shows good design with clear gauges and simple, logical controls. The cloth upholstery has unexpectedly classy look and feel, and the plastic panels look nice too, but padded surfaces are scarce.

Luggage space in the hatch suffers a bit due to the truncated rear end, but the boot is still able to carry a couple of large suitcases.

Power for both Accent bodies comes from a 1.6-litre engine. This time around it's a high-tech unit with variable valve timing to fatten out the torque output. Noise and vibration dampening work well, even putting paid to a lot of the noise often created by coarse-chip surfaces.

On-road behaviour is relatively neutral for a front-wheel-drive car.

The Accent hatchback cargo area is usefully larger than the sedan's trunk, but both body styles have a shallow openings that complicates loading bulky items. Folding rear seatback increases the useful cargo space. Other cabin storage is not great, but the front door map pockets include handy bottle holders.

Build quality continues to improve markedly in each new model from Hyundai and the body of the Accent shows clean panels with tight margins and an excellent paint finish.
