JEEP COMPASS review in detail:

Jeep's first soft-roader has fairly conservative styling from all angles except the front, where the traditional seven-slot grille and round headlights clearly identify its heritage. The Jeep Compass is an all-new small SUV. Unlike most of Jeep's products, the Compass is meant almost exclusively for street duty.

The grille is likely to be the focal point for most prospective buyers - traditional Jeep lovers will appreciate it, others may find it a bit too dominant.

Power for Compass comes from a choice of 2.4-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engines. The petrol Compass is mated with either five-speed manual or continuously variable (CVT) automatic; the diesel model is only available with a six-speed manual gearbox.

Diesel engines are still relatively scarce on the compact 4WD scene and the diesel option in Compass is likely to attract attention from the budget-conscious buyer in these times of high fuel prices.

The engine is borrowed from Volkswagen and provides a good combination of usable torque (310Nm between 1750 and 2000 rpm) and excellent fuel economy (6.5 litres per 100 kilometres), which is interesting.

Standard safety features include stability control with a rollover sensor, full-length side curtain airbags and traction control. Front seat-mounted side airbags are optional. Limited models have a standard tire-pressure monitoring system.

Compass can accommodate four adults in reasonable comfort, with the typically square Jeep body providing plenty of headroom for all passengers. Although generally well laid out, the Jeep's interior is a sea of hard plastic with inconsistent fit and finish. The result is an interior that screams "rental car," which is a shame, because the seats are comfortable and the driving position is excellent. It's also very easy to fold the rear seat flat, plus the front passenger seat folds so you don't have to strap large items to the roof. The cargo area is small, however. There's good rear legroom and the seats are comfortable and supportive.
