RENAULT LAGUNA review in detail:

Until mid 2006 surprisingly, Renault, one of Europe's biggest manufacturers, didn't offer a diesel passenger car in Australia.

Now it has swung in the opposite direction and introduced a Laguna that's only available with a diesel engine.

The new Phase II Laguna has been on sale in Europe since March 2005. The delay in bringing the car to Australia was attributed to the unavailability, until recently, of a suitable automatic transmission.

Typical of the new breed of diesel engines, the Laguna's 2.2-litre common-rail turbo is only discernible as a diesel at idle, and then only from outside the car, but almost impossible to pick when cruising.

The suspension in the Laguna is slightly on the firm side in the European manner, but it cruises smoothly and comfortably.

The Tiptronic manual overrides can be quite stiff in their action although that may be mainly when they are new.

Laguna comes well equipped and includes a number of leading-edge features, such as a 'credit card' keyless entry system and an automatic parking brake.

The new keyless entry system card only has to be within the car to start the engine, and also allows the car's headlights to be switched while you are still outside the car.

Safety equipment includes multiple airbags, ABS brakes and stability control, as Renault is at the forefront of crash avoidance and protection during a crash.

When will the RENAULT LAGUNA be updated next?

The RENAULT LAGUNA update is expected to be around 4 2008

An all-new generation of the Renault Laguna is on the way, and we're looking forward to reviewing it. Petrol engines are very likely to be available.
