VOLKSWAGEN MULTIVAN review in detail:

Volkswagen's new seven seater Multivan has been upgraded with a touch of luxury and extras. The Multivan in its Highline trim comes with electrically operated sliding doors, a multi-function rear table, satellite navigation (about $4000 extra on lesser models), leather trim, heated front seats, 17-inch alloys, front and rear parking sensors plus front and rear fog lamps.

This latest VW Multivan is an variant of the new fifth-generation of VW Transporter vans. It retains a fair degree of heritage in that it is a sensible van with windows, not a sleek people mover.

It offers plenty of interior space and the ability to move around without too much contorting of the body. Most model variants have seven seats and plenty of luggage space behind them.

There is also an useful special variant called the Multivan Business that comes with stretch-out room for six people, all in leather-trimmed bucket seats.

Another interesting variants is the Kombi Beach, a fun vehicle that provides instant accommodation wherever you stop. It is not a people mover as such, however, because there are only seats for four. The left-hand seat in the centre row has been converted to a storage space with a large drawer underneath.

Multivans have excellent performance from either the V6 petrol engine or a torque-laden turbo-diesel. The 2.5-litre diesel is VW's five-cylinder engine with intercooler, giving 128kW of power at 3500rpm and 400Nm of torque at 2000rpm. With 4Motion AWD, either engine has to drive through a six-speed manual gearbox. In the front-wheel drive version, they come with a six-speed tiptronic automatic.

Ride comfort is excellent and the steering and road grip appeal to the keen driver.
