Geely was founded in 1986 as a maker of refrigerators. In 1994, Gely began manufacturing motorcycles, followed by small van production in 1998. Three years later, Geely was granted state approval to manufacture automobiles.

Geely approached Ford in mid-2008 about a possible takeover of Volvo Cars. On October 28, 2009, Geely was named as the preferred buyer of Volvo by the American automaker. A deal was reached in late March and completed in early August, 2010.

Geely wants to make Volvos in China, but has yet to gain approval from the Chinese state.

There are new and used Geely dealers located in Melbourne , Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, Hobart, Canberra (most suburbs) and regional Australia. Most dealers also deal some other make at the same dealer. Few dealers offer a worthwhile Car Insurance for your Geely, however.

Geely comes with a factory warranty provided by the manufacturer. After the factory warranty has expired, you need to purchase and extended warranty for your Geely. Things to look out for when buying an extended warranty are:
