ALFA ROMEO SPIDER review in detail:

Alfa's new Brera coupe and Spider convertible look simply superb.

The V6 engine is of interest as it is finished by Alfa Romeo in Italy and based on the V6 block manufactured by Holden in Australia. It uses Alfa Romeo's Q4 all-wheel-drive system.

A four-cylinder powerplant is also on offer.

All this gives the Alfa Romeo the feeling of a rear-drive car, but with extra road grip when compared to a normal rear-driver.

The standard six-speed manual gearboxes are in line with the engine and therefore a fair way from the gear lever, but this works well.

The seats could be considered pretty firm and after a few hours of driving the driver will probably feel a need to stop for a break.

During hard cornering the seats do not locate the driver's body as well as they could, which is surprising, and the pedals are not exactly perfectly placed. It can be found that the driver feels a need to hold the steering wheel for support when lifting the left foot to operate the clutch pedal, which can detract from the driving experience.

The rear seat space is probably best left to the kids.

In the coupe the boot space is fine but it is a bit tight in the Spider - this could be considered no worse that some others in the class.
