BMW 530D review in detail:

It costs more than it should, but among midsize luxury sedans and wagons, the 2007 BMW 5 Series is by far the most satisfying to drive.
The 5 Series is doing well in the sales race in Australia, even though the styling of the 5 Series is said to be among the most controversial of all the latest range of BMWs.

The styling of the cabin creates a great sporting/luxury environment and is very much part of the appeal of this prestigious German car.

Interior space isn't too bad, but the back seat is more suited to less than average sized passengers.

Handling and steering are simply superb, which is a result of the balance gained through the use of rear-wheel drive.

The smallish V8 is smooth, purposeful and very responsive and hence simply a delight to sit behind. This is probably the pick of the big variety of engines on offer, though buyers do love the straight-sixes for which BMW has been famed for years.

There's something that is just so right about the sound of the six-cylinder petrol engine.

These days the 5 Series comes with a turbo-diesel engine option, which is also in straight-six format. Other than at idle, where there's still a definite diesel rattle, the oil engine is difficult to pick from a petrol unit.

It pulls like a train, starts almost instantaneously and, aided by a quick-acting, six-speed automatic transmission, offers the ability to climb hills effortlessly and fast overtaking.
