In 2006 BMW gave its X3 a full-on makeover, with a revamped interior, bolder look and more engine power.
The famed BMW double-kidney grille at the front is larger than before and having the foglights spaced further apart gives a broader appearance. The overall effect is one of a bolder-looking vehicle.
The design of the dash and instrument area remains unchanged, but wood and aluminium trim is now used in all versions of the car, not just the top of the line ones.
Three different straight-six engines, two petrols and a diesel are available. All have been revised and now have more power and torque, with the diesel now being offered over a wider spread or revs. Despite the added performance, the BMW engineers have managed to make the engines cleaner and more economical at the same time.
Realistically, the BMW X3 has seating for four adults and a child. Rear seat space is pretty good and there's no real need to move the front seats forward to give those in the back comfortable legroom.
The boot is a good size, well shaped and offers easy access, though the floor is quite high so loading heavy items can involve some effort.
