MERCEDES-BENZ CLS500 review in detail:

The Italians and Brits have been designing low-slung sporting saloons for years, but the CLS-Class is a new market niche for Mercedes. Low-slung and elegant, this four-door Merc has superb style that's sure to please all who love great-looking cars.

The rear seat is deliberately designed for two, not three, with a stylish centre console that goes all the way from the dashboard to the rear-seat backrest.

Ease of access is created by the rear doors and a good-sized back seat, which lift it well away from the typical two-door coupe.

There's not a huge amount of rear headroom or legroom if you look at the CLS as you would a sedan, but as a coupe it works fine.

Visibility looking out isn't too bad for adults, but children may find their outlook hampered by the high waistline. The cabin design is as adventurous and elegant as the exterior surfaces.

The 5.0-litre was the first model launched in Australia, followed a few months later by the V6 3.5-litre. Mated to a seven-speed automatic, the V8 provides effortless power but the V6 is likely to be fine for most owners.

Ride comfort is good and there's not as much road noise on coarse-chip surfaces as might be expected.
