PROTON SAVVY review in detail:

The Savvy is a great-looking small car with a neat nose like no other car on the market.

The handling of the Savvy is excellent and it has had considerable chassis work from Lotus.

The way it turns in, holds the road and changes direction quickly and easily will really appeal to keen drivers.

Power comes from a 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine and performance isn't particularly good.

You really do need to keep the revs high to get the best from it, which isn't a huge chore as the gearbox works nicely and it can be fun to hunt the car along.

Interior room is reasonable for four adults, though two plus a couple of kids makes a lot more sense in a car of this size.

The boot is good and the way the rear seats flip-fold further improves it.

Proton now has the German TUV organisation looking closely at the way cars are put together in the Malaysian factory, so build quality has improved in the past couple of years.

Savvy is currently being sold only as a five-door hatch, though other types are expected to follow at a later date.

Proton is known to be involved in talks with European makers on the subject of possible partnerships, so further down the track we may see new engines.

A sporting engine in this chassis could make for an excellent car.
