SSANGYONG CHAIRMAN review in detail:

Chairman can be looked at as an expensive Korean car, or a very cheap new/old Mercedes-Benz as it is heavily based on an old Mercedes S-Class from the early 1990s, but with some changes to give it a more modern appearance.

The bonnet-front and headlights are sort of based on those of the 'four-eyed' E-class Benz, but to our eyes they give the Chairman a bug-eyed look that really doesn't work as well as its designers had hoped.

It has plenty of interior goodies, including real-leather and pseudo-wood trim, and powered seats that are heated in all five positions, not just in the front seats.

This SsangYong makes a good large cruiser as it lopes along without a lot of fuss.

Chairman rides and handles about as well as we can remember these old Mercs doing when they were on the new-car market.

This big car is powered by a modified version of Mercedes' old 3.

2-litre straight six.

It's now mated to a modern sequential five-speed automatic transmission.

A long-wheelbase version of the Chairman is offered only on special order.

It comes with an extra 300mm of rear-seat legroom to put it comfortably into the limo class.
