MAZDA History

From its base in Hiroshima, Japan, the Mazda Motor Corporation manufactures a diverse line of passenger cars and commercial vehicles and is one of the largest employers in western Japan, with some 26,000 employees. In calendar year 2000, Mazda produced some 778,140 cars and trucks at its two production facilities in Japan: Hiroshima and Hofu. In addition, Mazda cars were produced in the United States at Michigan-based AutoAlliance International Inc. Mazda cars and trucks are also currently assembled in 19 other countries around the world.

The Hiroshima plant is one of the largest single-site automobile manufacturing plants in the world, with an annual production capacity of approximately 706,000 units. Hofu plant I, which opened in September 1982, is capable of producing 230,000 vehicles per year. In February 1992, the new, highly advanced production facility, Hofu plant II, began operations at the site. The state-of-art Hofu plant II has an annual production capacity of 163,000 units. All of Mazda's facilities feature 'mixed-model' production capability.
